<p>Looking through some old notes, I came across  this <a title="email marketing best practices" href="http://www.marketingsherpa.com/1news/chartofweek-03-29-11-lp.htm" target="_blank">MarketingSherpa chart</a> from May showing the most  effective tactics for growing your in-house  email list.</p>
<p>It resonated anew with me today because of the response to a post  published by our CEO at the <a title="email marketing best practices" href="http://emailcritic.com/2011/05/how-to-organically-grow-opt-in-email-lists/">Email Critic blog</a>.  Marco’s post argued for having more than a simple sign up box on your  website for encouraging subscriptions. At <a title="email marketing best practices" href="http://www.clickmailmarketing.com" target="_blank">ClickMail</a> we encourage our  email marketing clients to remember that  an email address has value. To get the email address, you must offer  something in exchange. That’s one reason for suggesting businesses do  more than simply have a signup box on their website.</p>
<p>This MarketingSherpa chart says kind of the same thing, if you look at  the numbers. Out of the 10 tactics survey respondents could choose from,  the top four have something in common. Let’s call it engagement. Each  of the top four methods for legitimately acquiring  an email address involves the subscriber engaging with the organization  at some level. The top four tactics according to the survey are:</p>
<p>1.    Signing up when making a purchase</p>
<p>2.    Submitting an email address in order to get a download</p>
<p>3.    Submitting an email address to register for an online event</p>
<p>4.    Signing up when at a tradeshow</p>
<p>With the first three, the subscriber is getting something. And I suspect  with the fourth, they are as well, as tradeshow booths usually have  giveaways and raffles to entice people to sign up for emails. And that’s  email marketing best practices, to offer something  of value to the potential subscriber so they see it as a fair exchange  and they sign up.</p>
<p>The two least effective tactics? Social sharing and forward-to-a friend.  Neither of these offers any kind of engagement with your organization  at all. Hence the difference. You must offer both as part of your email  marketing best practices! But this chart shows  you can’t rely on them alone, any more than you can rely on a simple  signup box alone on your website.</p>

<p>Because he’s doing so much public speaking on email marketing these days, we’re starting with Michael Kelly, Director of Business Development and a co-founder of the company.<br />

<p>Michael’s energy level and enthusiasm are such that it often seems he’s two people…because he’s doing the work of two people and he moves so fast! Michael has two decades-worth of sales experience in the telecommunications and messaging industries. Before helping to found email marketing vendor ClickMail, he was a top sales professional for Computer Telephone Corp, Pacific Bell, and Cable &amp; Wireless.</p>

It’s a communications tool and a way to build and maintain a relationship with your subscribers and customers.</p>
<div>Lately I’ve received regular updates from a financial institution, telling me how they’re handling a sticky situation, reassuring me, and letting me know I have a person to contact if I had any questions.  Although it was not a personalized email the point came across and grabbed my attention.</div>
<div>After the jump&#8230;why their use of email really worked for everyone: </div>

<div>·         In the past my financial institution sent out communication via snail mail. I did not pay much attention to it because I took it as junk mail.  By sending email, it caught my attention and I acted quickly.</div>

<div>·         Knowing that the institution had been sending me regular updates regarding this crisis, I logged into my account when I received the first email to see how this impacted my personal account.  The timeliness would not have been possible through snail mail.</div>

<div>·         The high level of communication through the updates left me reassured that they were updating me as fast as they received information and made me a more secure customer.</div>

<div>Think about how many times a company uses their database solely for marketing. Maybe that’s the mindset of your email marketing program as well?  Think about the other positives that can come out of email, including education, information, and updates.  It shouldn&#8217;t take a crisis for you to build and strengthen a bond with your customers. Consider email newsletters, helpful tips, recipes or whatever ties in with your business.  </div>
<div>Change your thinking about email and you will get more out of it. Remember, it’s more than a sales tool. It’s a way to communicate.</div>
