I don’t mean the more you know about the technicalities and how to’s of email marketing. I mean the more you know about your list. In the old days of email marketing, you’d craft one email and send it to your whole list. Not any more. Now consumers are more cynical about email and less likely to be receptive to let alone open any emails you send. This means you have to be more relevant. And to do that, you have to know them, what they want, what they’re doing.

Getting each one on the phone to find out more about them isn’t going to work, so how do you learn more about your subscribers?

Loren McDonald of Silverpop had a great article on using Web analytics to learn more about your customers. As he points out, the resource is there for email marketers, but it’s not always used:

“Despite Web analytics’ benefits, incorporating it into email is still a challenge for many marketers. Forty-one percent told Jupiter Research they don’t have the resources to do it, while another 36% said they couldn’t integrate the two applications.”

Loren relates the example of Diapers.com using Web analytics to send reminder emails to parents who abandoned shopping carts probably because they had to go take care of their little one. It’s a great example of tying web stats to email and in this case resulted in a 110% increase in net conversions.

The article closes with three “baby steps” to take to get started with Web analytics, and yes, there is an apology for the pun.

Are you ready to learn more about your audience so you can increase your email marketing ROI? Talk to your email provider for their input on integrating the potential knowledge base of your website activity with your email initiatives.

If you are ready for your email marketing to transcend borders, you should be sure your email service provider is ready too. What impact will international email marketing have on your choice of email provider?

You may already be email marketing to a global audience without really thinking about it or planning for it, but as the economy goes global, you might want to think ahead about the ramifications of international email marketing.

Email service providers may not be able to help you with the cultural differences and language issues that need to be considered, but a company that works with multiple vendors and can assess which solution would fit your international email marketing needs may be a good way to go. Email marketing challenges you’ve already addressed for your American audience exist for an international audience too: deliverability, multiple ISPs, monitoring, determining problems and solutions, etc.
